Digital grand pianos differ from traditional and electric pianos in that they produce sound via entirely digital means, whereas in traditional grand pianos hammers strike strings to produce a tone and electric pianos use a pickup to amplify vibrations either produced by a string or other means.
Digital grand pianos are very popular primarily due to them being significantly less expensive than traditional pianos, making them much more affordable to the general public. Digital pianos are also smaller than traditional pianos making them ideal for use in the home. A further advantage of digital pianos is that they require very little maintenance such as tuning to the absence of strings and other delicate working parts. Some digital pianos are also able to replicate the sounds of other instruments.
Many players shun digital grand pianos are argue that they do not accurately replicated the sound or the feel of a traditional piano. However many of the more expensive high end digital pianos include features such as weighted keys in attempt to replicate the feel of ‘real’ pianos.
The MIDI capabilities of most digital grand pianos make them a popular choice for many people as it allows them to be controlled by digital sequencers.
